Peter Kim Seong-sil lived in Jaam (present-day Bongrae-dong, Sunhwa-dong, and Uijuro in Jung-gu, Seoul) outside the South Gate in Seoul. When he grew up, he married Barbara Yi. He earned a living by making and selling coffins. Peter Kim Ip-dol was his younger son who died a martyr at Jwa-Podocheong (the left bureau of the police headquarters) in 1868.

Around 1836 when Peter was 29 years old, he learned the catechism from Mark Jeong Ui bae the catechist living in the same village and received private baptism and a baptismal name from him. Peter was kind and sincere by nature. As soon as he became a Catholic, he taught the catechism to his wife and children and led a life of faith diligently with them. He also helped poor Catholics very much because he was compassionate. He met Bishop S. Berneux (Siméon Jang Gyeong-il) through Mark Jeong the catechist, and received the Sacrament of Reconciliation from the bishop several times.

The Byeongin Persecution broke out in 1866 and two years later his younger son Peter Kim Ip-dol died a martyr around the leap-month April in 1868. After that, Peter Kim Seong-sil was on the run from the police, moving from place to place. Later, along with Peter Choe Heung-yeop, Andrew Oh Bok-seong, and others, Peter Kim Seong-sil moved to Yongin in Gyeonggi province and lived there. In November (by the lunar calendar) 1870, Andrew Oh was arrested by the police when he went to a town to sell straw shoes. The police preceded by Andrew came and arrested Peter Kim Seong-sil and Peter Choe Heung-yeop. At the time of his arrest, the police pushed Peter Kim Seong-sil to tell the names of Christians. He replied to them by saying, “Catholicism has taught me to love others. How can I tell you the names of fellow Catholics? Catholics whom I know died as martyrs mostly or fled to another place. I do not know their whereabouts.”

Shortly afterwards, Peter Kim Seong-sil was taken to Jwa-Podocheong along with other Christians. He had to undergo interrogation and torture, but he witnessed to his faith to the end by saying, “How can I apostatize?” As a result, he died a martyr by hanging after January 18, 1871 (November 28, 1870 by the lunar calendar) at the age of 64.

김성실(金成實) 베드로는 서울 남문 밖 자암(紫岩, 현 서울 중구 봉래동⋅순화동⋅의주로)에서 거주했으며, 장성한 뒤 이 바르바라와 혼인하였고, 관을 짜 팔면서 생계를 유지하였다. 1868년에 좌포도청에서 순교한 하느님의 종 김입돌(金立乭, 베드로)은 그의 작은 아들이다.

베드로는 29세 때인 1836년 무렵에 같은 마을에 살던 정의배(丁義培, 마르코) 회장에게 천주 교리를 배웠고, 대세(代洗)와 세례명도 받았다. 본래 성품이 착하고 진실하였던 그는 천주교에 입교하자마자 아내와 자식들에게 교리를 가르쳐 함께 열심히 신앙생활을 했으며, 애긍을 좋아하여 가난한 교우들을 많이 도와주었다. 그리고 마르코 회장의 인도로 베르뇌(S. Berneux, 張敬一 시메온) 주교를 만나 여러 차례 고해성사를 받았다.

1866년에 병인박해가 일어나고 2년 뒤인 1868년 윤 4월경에 작은 아들 베드로가 순교한 뒤, 김성실 베드로는 이리저리 피신해 다니다가 최흥엽(崔興燁, 베드로), 오복성(吳福成, 안드레아) 등과 함께 경기도 용인으로 이주해 살았다. 그러나 1870년 11월(음력) 안드레아가 읍내로 짚신을 팔러갔다가 체포된 뒤, 그를 앞세운 포교들에 의해 김성실 베드로와 최흥엽 베드로도 체포되었다. 그때 포교들이 “다른 교우들의 이름을 말하라.”고 다그치자, 김성실 베드로는 “천주교에서는 남을 사랑하라고 가르치는데, 어찌 교우들의 이름을 대겠소? 또 이미 알던 교우들도 대부분 순교하거나 다른 곳으로 피신하였고, 그들이 간 곳은 알 수 없소.”라고 대답하였다.

이내 교우들과 함께 좌포도청으로 압송되어 문초와 형벌을 받게 된 김성실 베드로는 “어찌 배교한다는 말을 할 수 있겠소?”라고 하면서 끝까지 신앙을 증거하였다. 그 결과 그는 1871년 1월 18일(음력 1870년 11월 28일) 이후에 교수형으로 순교했으니, 당시 그의 나이 64세였다.
